Door Decorating Contest

One of the jobs many teachers find difficult is using creativity to design their classroom. Students were tasked with the job of meeting with a teacher, listening to their ideas, needs and wants to brainstorming a door decoration for their room. Students were given 50 minutes today to plan, assembly and photograph their door decoration.

This year’s theme was based on the season OR anti-bullying messages.  

 This is a scrabble for students to accomplish intentionally to help them gain a perspective of multitasking, meeting deadlines, working under pressure, problem solving with limited resources and communicating with a group. Please check out their amazing work below!

Book Box 3

I’m Sorry

            Miss Jordan choose a book from the Little Critter Series, I’m Sorry which talked about when any individual should say they are sorry and how saying sorry is a part of having good manners. She choose to have everyone go outside of the classroom to read her book and the change of environment was great. She then asked students to write a letter apologizing for something they have done in the paste they was a mistake.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Miss Juliet choose Eric Carl and read The Very Hungry Caterpillar to our class which follows the eating habits and transformation of an itty bitty caterpillar into a beautiful butterfly. She then had each student complete one link of a chain with their favorite food by drawing and coloring a dish (or two). She then linked everyone’s chain together to make our very own class caterpillar who had a very full stomach.

The Ear Book

Miss Lindsay share The Ear Book to our class which is a story exploring what you can hear in your ear. The book features all types of ears and what each ear hears. She then lead a lesson where students all created their very own ear, then wrote and spoke about what that ear could hear.

Book Box 2

The Lonely Moose

Miss Alisha read a wonderful story about an unlikely friendship between a bid and moose. the story focused on the need to be a loyal friend even if someone is different from you. Students’ created their own friendship bird and colored him in based on symbols that matched that of a good friend.

We then went on an adventure to take an outside to put our birds in a tree.

Horton Hears A Who

Miss Bridget read aloud Horton Hears a Who for the class as her book box. She then had each student complete a writing assignment where they wrote a short story about who they hear on a speck. Students were instructed to use complete sentences and completed a worksheet designed for a 1^st grader with lines to help with letter formation.

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie…

Miss Jessica was our first Book Box presenter, she read the If You Give a Mouse a Cookie to the class and everyone enjoyed using their imagination to create their own cookie out of construction paper. She also brought in a special treat of milk and chocolate chip cookies for everyone to enjoy.

Henny Penny

            Mr. Kilmer presented out second book box and did an excellent read aloud of Henny Penny. This is a story about a Chicken who believe the sky is falling when she is hit in the head and follows the story of her making friends. Kilmer tied in the idea of friendship and exercised our creativity to trace and cut out our own hand and create a farm animal that could join Henny Penny on her adventure.

Parent Communication

This Thursday students perfected their “sandwiches.” The sandwich method is commonly used to deliver bad news, and involves stating a positive, the complaint/offense, offering a resolution or plan and then ending on a positive statement.

Groups constructed their own complement sandwiches addressing one of their students who did not follow a class rule. We had some very creative takes on a compliment sandwich (see below).

 Students continued working on their own class newsletter, syllabus, and welcome home letter that they will save in their portfolio and can possibly use in their own classroom one day.

Students utilized Schoology, Pinterest, Publisher, Word and Powerpoint to complete each of these assignments. Some highlights were

· Composing text and information to be sent to “parents” in a professional matter

· Constructing a newsletter using a template on Publisher

· Designing documents to fit their individual tastes and design wants

· Mastering how to format pictures within text

· Adding boarders and design within a Word document

· Adapting sample documents to reflect individual classrooms and teaching styles

Guest Speaker 9/24

Today we were fortunate to host our second guest speaker of the year, Asyia Foster-Nelson the Early Childhood advisor from JCCC. Aysia was able to explain the Early Childhood Program offered at Johnson County Community College in greater detail and answer questions about prerequisites for admittance to the program, college now and AP courses and walk students through the admissions process. She advised students to contact her directly when it is time to schedule your JCCC college visit because she can give you greater insight into the college and program. She will help you find a course to sit in on, give you a tour of the Child Development Lab, take you through the education classroom and help you meet education students.

Don’t forget to schedule a college visit and pick up a College Visit Verification form from the office 48 hours before your visit!
